Art in Algoma

A unique opportunity to practice your art in rugged Lake Superior country while enjoying your visit in one of the North’s premier lodges.

We’ve put together two packages for artists who want to experience the countryside where the Group of Seven painted.  You can join an organized workshop with an instructor. Or you can come here to paint independently.

Stokely Creek Lodge
Stokely Creek Lodge is located in the Algoma Highlands Conservancy.  It’s surrounded by streams, lakes, waterfalls, dense forest and rocky outcrops.  King Mountain rises 525 metres and the nearby Robertson Lake Cliffs provide stunning panoramic views.  Beautiful inland lakes sit in forested bowls. An extensive trail system opens all of these sights for you.
Stokely was originally created as a Scandinavian-style back-country ski lodge. The main building was designed by an award-winning architect and located near the tumbling waters of Stokely Creek.  Other small chalets are situated nearby. Each guest room is simple and elegant.
Stokely’s kitchen has a well-earned reputation for fresh, delicious meals.

Dates

The lodge is open for seven weeks in August and September.  These late summer days are still long and warm. The forests are free from insect pests.  Golden colours are beginning to show in the trees.  By September, the leaves are turning into gorgeous autumn displays.

Your itinerary

Our travel itineraries are the same for both independent artists and those in our workshops.
You’ll fly from Toronto Island on Porter Air to Sault Ste. Marie on Monday morning and return on Friday afternoon.  A local bus service will provide your transportation between the lodge in Goulais River and the airport.

You’ll spend five days and four nights at Stokely.  All meals are provided, including lunch and dinner on Monday and breakfast and lunch on Friday.  You’ll carry your lunch with you to your working site each day.

Our artists’ workshops

An impressive group of artists have agreed to lead our workshops.  Each one is an accomplished landscape painter with plenty of experience as a workshop leader. We’re limiting our workshops to small groups of ten to fifteen people.
Here’s our timetable and the people who’ve agreed to lead each workshop.  Click on the links for more information from the artists’ websites:

If it rains and you decide not to go outdoors, you’ll be able to work in the Club House area. All the facilities in the lodge are there for your enjoyment.
